I recently heard about a restaurant owner who grows his own organic herbs and vegetables in a garden right behind his kitchen. That’s the perfect analogy for Finch Paper.
Our foresters’ philosophy revolves around natural regeneration — helping Mother Nature do what comes naturally in the forest. Everything a Finch forester does before and after a timber harvest is scientifically designed to help that forest renew itself just as Mother Nature would. Certain areas of land are optimum for the growth of certain kinds of trees, based on exposure to sunlight, soil type, land slope, proximity to water bodies, etc. We don’t try to manipulate those conditions to grow different kinds of trees; we mimic Mother Nature and accept, respect and utilize what she gives us.
Finch foresters also do not use pesticides or fertilizers in the forests we manage, allowing the soil, rain and sunlight to spur growth. We allow nutrients to return to the soil naturally. And we keep the ecosystems free of chemicals. We consider the trees grown here, in our own backyard, truly organic.
