Wedding invitations are a big deal, often times they are a big, frothy girly deal, which isn’t a bad thing. The desire was for authentic and vibrant in the case with the bride and groom commissioning *these* invitations. Creative Squall found a way to marry the masculine and feminine in a way that allowed the bride and groom to communicate their message without losing the spirit and strength of their personalities, a feat that is featured in this month’s issue of HOW magazine.

Why uncoated? Specifically why Finch?
I chose an uncoated stock for a more hand-done aesthetic particularly since the type and ornamentals are hand drawn with a loose feel to make the invite feel more personal and intimate. The subtle color of Finch Opaque Vanilla added warmth to the color palette without adding a third color. The smooth feel of the surface allowed the colors to look sharp while adding a soft, skin-like texture to the final piece.

What is your favorite font?
As a logo designer, I prefer custom typography and I often find myself creating or tweaking fonts. However, I’ve noticed that I’ve been leaning towards Clarendon and other slab serif fonts in my other design work. Though that changes from project to project.

Do you have a design pet peeve?

The term web 2.0 to describe a design style, particularly in logo design. Web 2.0 refers to the interactive functionality of a website particularly in regards to social media functionality. Asking for a logo to look Web 2.0 is the equivalent of asking a chef to make something taste more purple.
