Our commitment.

tree

Since the turn of the last century, we have practiced sustainable forestry, generated most of our own power, and made our own pulp to produce the high-quality, affordable uncoated printing relied on by designers, printers, businesses and institutions across the United States and Canada.

Our guiding principles are uncommonly simple—yet require serious, innovative science at nearly every step of the forestry and manufacturing process.

What we believe

  • Finch Paper employs its own team of
professional foresters who personally care for more than 180,000 acres
of certified forests that provide wood to our mill—including more than
160,000 acres owned by The Nature Conservancy.
  • We are pleased that the woodlands we manage are certified for both
Forest Management and Chain-of-Custody from the Forest Stewardship
    Council
(SW-COC-000934) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative
(PcW-SFICOC-293). But it’s not like we had to take a special course in
how to get certified—essentially, we said here’s what we’ve been doing,
and they said good, keep it up.
  • Healthy, growing forests also play a vital role in eliminating
greenhouse gases from the environment by capturing and storing carbon
dioxide. It is estimated that the forest under Finch management
currently store more than 34 million tons of carbon dioxide—an amount
that is growing by 128,000 tons per year.
  • None of the wood or pulp used to make Finch Paper comes from
endangered or threatened forests. In fact, we make more than 75% of our
pulp on our own premises, using wood from the forests that we manage,
or wood purchased from other responsible landowners. We have a
stringent chain-of-custody program in place to track the source of our
wood and ensure that it comes from responsibly managed North American
forests rather than from continents thousands of miles away. We believe
that knowing firsthand where your paper fiber is sourced is a good
first step in reducing your environmental impact.
  • Approximately two-thirds of the energy used by Finch Paper comes
from renewable, non-fossil fuel sources. We utilize the power of the
Hudson River to produce emission-free, renewable electricity. We also
operate a cogeneration facility that uses all the bark, sawdust and
rejected wood chips we can find—ours as well as anyone else’s—to
generate steam to dry our paper, and power to run our equipment.

This energy flows directly to our manufacturing operations.

  • We capture 50 million pounds per year of the greenhouse gas carbon
dioxide from our processes before it is released to the environment and
re-use it to make precipitated calcium carbonate, a brightening agent
for paper. The emissions prevented are equivalent to conserving 2.5
million gallons of gasoline. We also capture sulfur dioxide (a
precursor to acid rain) to make cooking liquor in our pulping process.
  • Our concept of a healthy forest is grounded in our belief that
environmentally sound time harvesting is good for society, good for the
forest, and good for the wildlife it sustains. For more than 100 years,
we have selectively taken timber from forestlands we manage (less than
2% per year) and at the same time, the forest has been continuously
renewed with young trees that will grow to full maturity, maintaining a
    valuable ecosystem off-limits to developers.
  • More than 75% of the forest landowners in the northeastern United
States are private individuals or families. Rising property taxes and
commercial opportunities create pressure on these landowners to sell or
develop. We help them keep their forests as open space by providing a
market for responsibly harvested wood and giving them guidance in
    responsible forest management.
  • All of the pulp made by Finch Paper, and our outside suppliers, is
elemental chlorine free. The post-consumer fiber we purchase is process
    chlorine free.
  • We are serious about our obligation to adhere to all Federal, New
York State and Local laws, rules and regulations. By participating with
many forest and government associations such as the Adirondack
Landowners Association, the FSC Family Forest Alliance, and The Empire
State Forest Products Association, we provide education to foresters
and legislatures to keep the forests healthy, sustainable and
    productive.
